I had my most recent “meltdown” October of last year. I’ve been diagnosed with Bipoloar II, my mom has Bipolar I, and my younger brother who was probably also bipolar took his life when he ended his battle with depression 19 years ago age 22. I’ve been an open advocate for prevention and awareness right away but was neglecting the grief process and learned the hard way about self care. The day after I got out of the hospital From a two week stay, as I was feeling sorry for myself wondering how I ended up here again, I was on Facebook and noticed Kevin Hines finally responded to my friend request. He was scheduled to speak at the local University two weeks later. I thought if anyone would know how I felt he would. So I sent him a PM bearing my soul. I ordered his book to read before the presentation and finished it the day he arrived. He saw my message but didn’t respond, but I was fine with it because I knew he got swamped with messages all the time. I posted a flyer about the event and he posted “I hope you have a quick recovery Raela”. His story became my beacon of hope to get me back on my path of raising awareness but taking care of myself first. I sent him a message about the DREAM Project CD, an awareness tool I’ve produced two volumes to benefit different Suicide prevention orgs and told him I wanted to give a copy to him. We met backstage before his speech, he gave me the best hug and let me release my tears. Our brief encounter exchanging my CD for him signing my copy of his book and taking a selfie was the best dose of medicine, followed by his incredible speech. I just couldn’t believe he was real after reading what he survived. Since then we’ve stayed in touch and I connected him with a suicide awareness program in Australia while he was there working on his movie. I cannot wait to see the movie! Kevin is a kind a real person, I’ve taken heed from his regimen of self care and know that I have to implement as well in order to live mentally well. I’m glad our paths have crossed!

I am a fan of Kevin Hines because he gives me hope. I first meet him six years ago when he was a speaker at a community event put on by Transitions MHA in San Luis Obispo. I was not only inspired by his story but it gave me hope.
I work in mental health and specifically assisting individuals moving out of locked settings. The clients I work with are awesome and wonderful and I love my work. However, I still battle stigma and NIMBY\’s in the community, and most recently last week at a planning commission meeting in Morgan Hill. My anger and disgust sometimes gets in the way and blocks me and what I am trying to accomplish. I look at inspirational messages from people like Kevin and how they are breaking down the walls of discrimination and assumptions about people who live with a mental health diagnosis. It helps me go on and know that people can recover and live good, productive, creative, and fulfilling lives. Literally one person can do that for me. I have seen Kevin speak 5 or 6 times now, and I am sure unbeknownst to him I really am one of his greatest fans.

Kevin is one of those rare types of person that truly lives by his every word. He is an extremely powerful and engaging speaker and his passion is there for all to see.
Since I have got to know him he has dedicated his life to suicide prevention in a way that I have not see from many others, taking his story across multiple countries, stopping at nothing to get his very important message across. In doing so he is saving lives, daily, and his message should be heard by everyone.

I work for CASAT at UNR and I first heard of Kevin when our organization was hosting a suicide prevention seminar in Vegas. I immediately ordered his book and instantly felt a connection. My sister committed suicide by jumping to her death off of a bridge in Montana when she was 26 and I was 17. I always knew I was different, in that I am emotional and feel things deeply, just like Kevin. I have had bouts of depression, including my own “luxury vacations” at hospitals. Kevin is frank and honest with what it’s like to have bipolar disorder. He has brought the reality to the public and elicited shame in living with bipolar. Bipolar does not define those who have it. We are like anybody else who has a disease and needs treatment and medication. Kevin has helped eliminate the stigma of bipolar disorder, but we have a long road ahead. Keven has inspired me to “keep on keepin’ on” and to not be ashamed of who I am. I was honored to meet Kevin in Las Vegas and I was truly in the presence of greatness. He was humble, and warm. He was kind and passionate about his work. Kevin also made me realize that it’s okay to have setbacks and try again and again. I can tell you that the world is a better place with him advocating for changes to prevent suicides and encouraging the victims of this awful disease not to give up. I just cannot say enough about him. Bottom line, he deserves this award, and so much more recognition and support!
