I moved back to Gainesville to care for my elderly mom a couple years ago after retiring and decided between helping her out I wanted to volunteer with animals. after seeing a request for shelter volunteers on a post I decided to go to the orientation and become a volunteer at Alachua County Animal Shelter. I have been an official volunteer now for about a year and have met some amazing dogs n cats but most importantly the people caring for these animals are absolutely amazing! I believe Animal SHELTERS get a bad rap and I think ours deserves to be recognized for the amazing work they do.

Amazing staff that care about animals unconditionally! I got my first adopted dog from them, and she’s the best dog I’ve ever had!

My relationship with ACAS began when my husband and I adopted our first pit mix from them over 2 years ago. Since then, we’ve become more involved by volunteering, fostering, and even foster failing several times.
The staff there is warm and a pleasure to work with, and the team of volunteers we are a part of is so dedicated that I truly believe we are all a crucial part in helping ACAS save so many animals.
When people hear the term “Animal services” they tend to have negative thoughts… of a sad and cold place that euthanizes animals. ACAS is different than that though and you can feel the positive vibes when you walk through their front doors. They work closely with rescues in our community and have adoption events often so that they are very close to “no kill” status which is amazing for a high intake shelter. I’m so proud to not only have amazing furry family members that are ACAS alumni, but I’m proud to be a volunteer and be a part of the ACAS community!

Have adopted animals from Alachua County Animal Services for many years. The staff are always working so hard to keep the community involved to get as many animals adopted as possible. The staff get up once a week and are on our local TV station starting at 5am to bring cats and dogs to share with the TV audience. Hillary is so dedicated to doing this each week, what a great person she is! They have also worked very hard to have a no kill shelter as well. These are awesome people!

I adopted a dog from them 5.5 years ago. They were starting programs then to cut back ton the number of animals that were euthanized. Over these 5.5 years they have done a wonderful job in doing this including bringing other local rescues together in this venture, so they are all working together instead of at odds. I love that they are really working in the interest of the animals.

They do a great service for the community. I am able to get 3 year rabies vaccines for my cats here, as well as renew their licenses with the county, all at one place and for a really great cost. Most of my personal cats have been adopted from here, and you also get a free vet visit to a list of vets in Alachua County within 3 business days when you adopt from ACAS. The vets are very nice at ACAS, and work to make sure the animals are healthy, or work hard to make them better if they are not.
