One of the most relaxing, entertaining, happy occasions in my busy life is a visit to Steven’s salon, Smart Est. 73, in Weston. I still call it Hair Wizard, its original name. The entire priority of the owners and their staff is the satisfaction of the client – there’s no doubt about that. They know their regulars’ needs inside out. In my case they understand me better than I do myself. They always check on what you want at any particular visit, what time you need to be finished, how your hair has been behaving since the last visit. All the staff look suitably smart with a touch of glamour. Not enough to intimidate you, just enough to inspire. They are all bright, intelligent and enthusiastic. There’s laughter, quiet music, a good range of magazines and a calm atmosphere. Conversation covers a ridiculously wide range of topics. Never once, thank the Lord, have they asked me about holiday plans or what I’m planning for the evening. The décor is more like an elegant parlour than business premises. I just love it, especially the chandelier. On a busy day it provides an oasis of peace; on a quiet day it’s an injection of fun and interest. Amazingly, with all this lovely attention to everything else, you still emerge with the best cut ever, glowing colour and a feel good effect. I am ancient, relatively, but have been stopped in the street and approached in cafes by people wanting to know where I had my hair done.
